The Kilmorey Bursary Scheme

Our bursary scheme is now named The Kilmorey Bursary Scheme in memory of The Kilmorey Fund for Naval children at The Royal School Haslemere, which sadly closed its doors in 2025.  The name comes from Kilmorey House, the original site of the school in 1840.  We are very grateful to the Trustees of The Kilmorey Fund who have given the remaining money in their Fund to The Naval Children’s Charity.

The Bursary scheme has three parts to it:

Resource Award

For year 1 of study only, to be spent on equipment/resources for your course.

Cost of Learning Award

Annual bursary to be spent primarily on helping with the cost of rent/groceries/utilities.

Living Away From Home Award

Annual bursary if you are living away from home in student accommodation.

If you fit the following criteria you can apply for a Kilmorey bursary today!

  • You are the child/dependant of someone who is either a Serving or Veteran of the Royal Navy and 25 years or under (includes Royal Navy, Royal Marines, QARNNS, WRNS, Reserves and Royal Fleet Auxiliary)
  • You are starting or currently studying for an Undergraduate First Degree NOT Master/PhD/degree apprenticeships

Applications are open from 10th August 2026 to 31st October 2026 and will be processed in order of receipt (all paperwork received). We have a dedicated amount of funds for the scheme so reserve the right to close applications when that has been exhausted.

What to Provide

You will be asked to fill in an application form and provide the following information to accompany your application:

  • Gov UK paperwork if in England/Wales or SAAS paperwork if in Scotland confirming enrolment at the University, the end date of the course, and that they are in receipt of student finance.
  • If applicable confirmation that the young person will be living away from home
  • Verification of service of parent/guardian

Conditions of Award

If you are successful in receiving an Award, you will need to comply with the following grant conditions:

  • All applicants over 18 years of age must have a bank account in their own name. No parent or family member bank details will be accepted. Your Award will be administered through the Aspire portal and, if successful, you will be sent details on this.
  • If you leave your course for any reason you must get in touch with us as soon as possible.
  • In summer 2027 you will need to send us a copy of your final grades. Failure to send your grades may affect your eligibility for future grants from the Kilmorey Bursary Award scheme.

The Explora Scholarship Fund (ESF) is both a registered charity (number 1152232) and a Charitable Company (number 08381653). Its main object is to advance education by providing funds, and facilitating the establishment of scholarships in further or higher education, for the dependents of severely injured (physically or mentally) and deceased members of the UK Armed Forces, UK Security Services, Fire Service, Ambulance Service and Police Service  who were in Government Service when killed or injured

Lord Kitchener National Memorial Fund

Scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies, to be awarded in 2026. Please note that applicants must be a British subject and have served or be the son or daughter of a parent who has at any time served or is serving on a full-time engagement in HM Armed Forces. Former service men and women may be considered up to the age of 30.

The President’s Award Scheme

The Royal British Legion also offer University bursary support. The President’s Award Scheme (PAS) was set up by the Royal British Legion Women’s Section to assist those in financial need with costs linked to educational needs. The Scheme can provide two different types of financial support:

Educational Grants

Education Grants are one-off grants that can be awarded to help with costs linked to education.
The types of grants that can be applied for include:
  • course fees
  • public transport costs to attend courses
  • textbooks
  • course equipment (stethoscopes, chemistry equipment, etc)
  • laptops
  • printers
  • software (relevant to course)
  • specialist clothing, or
  • childcare costs linked to course attendance.
Please note that assistance is not limited to this list, and applications should still be submitted if you require help with a cost that is not shown above. The Committee will consider each application on its merits, and will make exceptions where needed, so please detail your request in the application as much as you can.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for an Education Grant, applicants must be:
  • The current or former service person
  • The partners or former partner of a current or former service personnel
  • A child 16 years and under, not in further education
  • Or a child under the age of 21 years old and in full-time education.
And:
  • undertaking an educational course lower than post-graduate level and not related to a work placement
  • applying for a grant for the first time (unless circumstances are exceptional)
  • the course being studied for is in the UK.
Applications submitted with incomplete sections or missing evidence may not be considered.

How to apply

Download and complete the Educational Grant Application Form and return it to the email or postal address listed below.
Applications are reviewed monthly for Educational Grants. The deadline for applications to be considered is the last day of the month. For example, for your application to be considered in June, you must submit the application by the 31st of May.

Educational Scholarship - University Accommodation Costs

Educational Scholarships can assist the dependents of current/former service personnel with the costs of accommodation while studying at university away from home.
Scholarships are up to £2,000 per academic year. Scholarships can be re-applied for each academic year that you are studying, up to a maximum of 3 years total.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for an Accommodation Scholarship Grant, applicants must be:
  • under the age of 21 (when applying for the first time)
  • a dependent of a current/former service person
  • staying away from home to attend university
  • undertaking an undergraduate course
The Committee is unable to consider applications for assistance with accommodation for post-graduate studies.
Applications submitted with incomplete sections or missing evidence may not be considered.

The committee meet to review applications for Educational Scholarships three times a year, in January, June and September. The deadline for applications to be considered is the 1st of the month before the meeting. For example, for your application to be considered at the June meeting, you must submit it by 1st May.
